SLice of Life Challenge On Tuesdays: Chapter 6

I bought a camera yesterday. In itself it might seem like just another purchase, but for me it’s an out-of-body experience, another measure of the distance I’ve traveled along the technology highway.

Maybe it’s not so amazing to you, but I remember the torture of trying to thread film into a camera. It was rare that I got it right, rare that I got all my pictures back from the drug store. but it was the pull and push to capture great moments in my classroom and freeze them on our bulletin board that kept me frustrated, but trying.

And then came the digital world, the delete key on the camera and photo software and without a moment of hesitation my old tech camera and film went into the garbage and hello memory card.

So last night I left Bergen County Camera with a serious camera, a Nikon D60 SLR with an AF-S VR Zoom- Nikkor 18-200mm lens. Of course I also had to get just the right bag, filters, a 4 gig memory card, a new strap, a card reader etc. I was flying.

That’s not to say I don’t already have a good camera, a Panasonic Lumix. I love that camera, but its limitations in low light are frustrating. I have grown out of it.

Anyone in the market for a great advanced-point-and-shoot?

I can’t wait to break in my new Nikon at our HVWP SI orientation this weekend. I’m up to log experience and create a digital story. Just to be on the safe side, I will have my trusty old camera by my side, before I put her out to pasture. I’m feeling sad as I finish this slice. She really needs a home.

Suggestions? dsc_0084.JPG

Wow, Bonnie, that is some sweet camera! You took such wonderful photos with your Lumix, I can’t wait to see what you do with the Nikon!

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Jane. It’s daunting, moving out of your comfort zone and in with the big boys. I did look at the next camera up and there’s no way I could hold it comfortably, but getting comfortable with the Nikon, I’m ready for that. Amazing, how we can grow at any age.

Oh, the D60 is my dream camera (well, you know, right behind the Leica Varilux, the ultimate-fantasy camera!). Have fun playing with your Nikon. I can’t wait to see more of your photos!

Wow!! That is one cool camera! I have no suggestions for you because you appear to be light years ahead of me in the digital camera technology!
I too remember threading film. Worse yet, I remember thinking I had threaded the film, going to a major event in my daughter’s life, only to realize I had no film in there whatsoever!! I guess I still have the memories!
