I think people feel a loss because so much of news has been banal and on the surface, and he rarely let politicians get away with a canned answer.

I first heard about Tim’s death on twitter. However, being an Australian, it did not mean anything to me but then so many people in my social network were commenting on it, so I knew he must have been a popular and influential person. Since I have established a social network, I have learned so much about other countries, their weather, politics, geography, culture etc far more so that from our local tv, newspapers and books.
