A Movie to Celebrate the Start of 2009: Frost/Nixon

Posted by blk1 on January 1, 2009

Thumbs way up for Frost/Nixon: Ron Howard director, Frank Langella as Nixon, and Michael Sheen taking on David Frost’s role.  fresh from his work in The Queen as Tony Blair. I had a good feeling about this piece and beieved that under the direction of Ron Howard it would come to life for me, where the play just didn’t.  I know it was a big hit on stage and I love plays, but I needed to feel the world of these interviews, the closeups on Nixon as we arrive at the last interview and Frank Langella’s remarkable creation of Nixon’s human tragedy.

I hated Nixon.  I didn’ t want to feel sorry for him and Langella forced me to look at the man behind his horrible leadership.  It’s been hard for most of my life to be a passionate Democrat with all these winning Republicans.  Nixon was the bane of my existence through my college years and even though I worked hard for my Democratic candidates there was Tricky.

I was thrilled to watch him pack his bags and leave the White house in disgrace, and given all that, I let myself feel sorry for Nixon the man after all these years.

I hope the Frank Langella is honored for his work; for this piece and for a wonderful movie from last year, Starting Over in the Night.

Golden Globes, Oscars…can’t wait.
